5 Podcasts Worth Listening To

May 22, 2017

I discovered podcasts about 3 years ago while road tripping to the Drakensberg mountains but it wasn’t till I was living in Berlin back in 2015 that I truly got hooked. Everyone was talking about a podcast called Serial and my FOMO kicked in – what was this show I was missing out on?

Turned out to be an incredibly gripping true crime series (I’m sure you know what I’m talking about but incase you’ve been living under a rock there’s more details further down.) and I was hooked!

Podcasts have now become a daily habit of mine – be it when I am driving, commuting around London or simply cleaning the house or cooking dinner I’ll have one playing in the background. They entertaining, educational and they stimulate my mind while I’m otherwise doing boring, menial work.

I’ve teamed up with Sudio – a Swedish headphone company – to offer all my readers a 15% discount on any Sudio purchase. Simply use the code  MYLIFEINPINK15 at checkout to receive your discount.

I use Sudio’s Vasa Blå wireless headphones on a daily basis and I’m obsessed. They don’t blow your eardrums like the Apple one’s do and the quality is exceptional. It has an 8 hour battery life and a built in microphone so you can take/make your calls too. Best part – no more tangled headphones!

Below I have compiled  a list of my top podcasts that I’ve find to be either entertaining or inspiring. I would love to hear what your favourite podcasts are so please do leave comments below in the comment section, or find me on Instagram at @emmajanementeath and drop me a message.

If you haven’t already listened to the first two seasons of Serial you seriously missing out. Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig and tells one story, a true story, over the course of a season.

The gripping first season deals with “a high-school senior named Hae Min Lee disappeared one day after school in 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland. A month later, her body was found in a city park. She’d been strangled. Her 17-year-old ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was arrested for the crime, and within a year, he was sentenced to life in prison. The case against him was largely based on the story of one witness, Adnan’s friend Jay, who testified that he helped Adnan bury Hae’s body. But Adnan has always maintained he had nothing to do with Hae’s death. Some people believe he’s telling the truth. Many others don’t.”

The second season is about Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S soldier that was held prisoner of the Taliban for nearly five years after having walked into the desert and deserted his responsibilities as a soldier. In May 2014 he was finally released. The military charged Bergdahl with two crimes, one of which carries the possibility of a life sentence.

Once again This American Life knock the ball out of the park with their new podcast S-Town (aka Shit Town). To say too much about S-Town is to ruin the slow-burn impact of its wildly unpredictable real-life Southern Gothic story, which explores the life and locale of a chronically dissatisfied Alabama man named John B. McLemore. It’s sad, it’s strange and it’s totally bewitching.

Genre: True Crime/Human tragedy

Perfect For: For anyone who got hooked on Serial.

Episodes to get hooked on: Episode 2 (particularly the end…)

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my entire life! Host Jamie Morton’s father went through a mid-life crisis and wrote an erotic novel called “Belinda Blinked.” It’s bad. Very bad. But so so good! Not for the faint hearted and I highly recommend listening to it with someone else, laughing together is just so much funnier.

Genre: Comedy

Perfect For: People who aren’t easily embarrassed by their parents’ Facebook pages.

Episodes to get hooked on: Episode 1, The Interview.
