April Beauty Favourites

May 2, 2018

I know we’ve just hit May (kind of scary that we almost half way through 2018) however I had this post drafted just before the long weekend and you know, life, it just kind of got in the way. So even though it’s a few days over due, here’s my April beauty favs round up featuring some of my favourite holiday must have’s…

SKOON skincare papaya and pineapple sherbet enzyme exfoliating face mask:
I’ve used a couple of Skoon’s skincare products over the years with my favourites being their Glow Drops and Rosehip C+ facial oils. However this enzyme exfoliating face mask is slowly stealing the limelight.

Suited for all skin types, the mask is a non-abrasive sherbet of enzymes and clay that exfoliate the build-up of dead skin cells and debris. It’s the perfect mask to use when suffering from breakouts as the enzymes help resurface the top layer of your skin without irritating or damaging it compared to a scrub exfoliator.

All of SKOON’s products are made locally in South Africa and uses naturally derived and organic ingredients.

*Available from SKOON Skincare for R499

Lipidol Sunscreen Oil SPF20:
I adore the simplicity of Lipidol’s packaging and marketing – clean and understated letting the product speak for itself with brilliant price points to match.

I used the Lipidol sunscreen while tanning in Mozambique, it provided the right amount of SPF coverage in order to still get that brown tan I was after. All well staying protected from Africa’s harsh UVA + B rays. Not to mention it has a delightful smell of cypress and basil and leaves your skin with a subtle sheen rather that a greasy residue.

My favourite thing about using a SPF oil vs a cream based sunscreen is how soft my skin feels after I wash up in the evenings. I suffer from very dry skin so any products that offer an extra bit of hydration my skin laps up.

* Available from Lipidol  for R89.95

Dior Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm:
These 3 Lip Glow’s were recently sent to me from Dior and I can not stop using them! Especially 004 Coral. It has a slight orange tint to it which my inner seventies babe is loving. (FYI, It’s the middle swatch on my wrist.)

The Lip Glow collection (there’s a total of 10 shades) is the first color reviver balm by Dior combining the comfort of a balm with a natural flush of custom colour suited to YOUR skin shade.

You can wear it alone, below, or on top of your lipstick: Apply it alone for a natural flush of colour, wear as a lip balm or primer or layer on top of your lipstick to change the effect.

I always carry a few of these Lip Glow sticks around in my handbag.

* Available at select Edgars stores nationwide

NUXE Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil:
This has been one of my firm beauty favourites for years now! I first discovered this product when I travelled to Paris for my 21st birthday in 2012. We spent a full week walking all over the city and every time a women passed me there was this heavenly smell that followed her. I eventually stopped one of these dreamy women and asked her what was causing Parisian women to exude such a magnificent scent of. She gave me a coy smile and told me it was her Nuxe oil and swore by it’s benefits. I walked into the nearest French pharmacy and bought 3 bottles and have been using it ever since.

A luxurious, heavenly scented dry oil that replenishes moisture and leaves your skin with a sensuous lustre that can be used (quite literally) from head-to-toe. It’s lightweight blend of six skin-restorative plant oils – Borage, St. John’s Wort, Sweet Almond, Camellia, Hazelnut and Macadamia – hydrates the skin post bath/shower without leaving a greasy residue. Over 98% of the ingredients are nature derived.

It’s the ultimate beauty multi-tasker product. If the French swear by it who are we to argue…

*Available at Woolworths Beauty for R290

4711 Original Eau de Cologne:
One of my go-to Summer holiday fragrances thanks to it’s aromatic citrus notes – it’s just screams Summer!

It was originally launched back in 1792 by Wilhelm Mülhens. According to legend a Carthusian monk made a wedding gift for the merchant Wilhelm Mülhens, the secret recipe of a so-called “aqua mirabilis”, a “miracle water” for internal and external use. Mülhens then founded a small factory at Cologne’s “Glockengasse” and established the first “Eau de Cologne” named 4711.

With notes of lemon and orange that revitalise, lavender and rosemary that strengthen the nerves and neroli that has a calming effect, this unisex fragrance creates a positive mood.

Here’s the best part, the 25ml watch bottle, which is perfect for traveling and keeping in your hand luggage, cost’s £5!!! So there’s basically no excuse not to try this incredible scent.

*Available online at Amazon for £4.97

Part 2: My Skincare Routine

May 1, 2014

Read part one here.

My daily skin routine is a bit extension but well worth it. It’s important to start looking after your skin from a young age, I thank my mother and my aunt for being so pedantic about skincare and products.

In the morning I wake up and wash my face with NeoStrata Restore facial cleanser, I then follow with a rose water and witch hazel toner and moisturise with Bioderma Sensibio Light Cream. Every morning, no matter the weather, I put sunblock on my face. I find the Vichy sun care products the best.

I exfoliate every morning, either with a dry brush or an exfoliating glove. Many people don’t realise how much dead skin we loose when we sleep, exfoliation will help moisturiser penetrate the skin better & helps to eliminate the build up of dead skin cells. Exfoliating every day will leave you with baby soft skin.

One of my favourite bathroom products is my Aesop Geranium Body Wash, it’s a small fortune for a body wash but I step out of the shower feeling like I’ve left a spa and that feeling is priceless to me.

After exfoliating I use Nivea Smooth Body Milk and a little tissue oil on my scars and yes stretch marks. Damn those evil white lines 😉

At night I wash my face with NeoStrata Restore facial cleanser again and instead of moisturising I use Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which is truly a skin product sent from the Gods.

I use Aesop Geranium Body Balm in the evenings to moisturise my body as I like to go to bed smelling like a spa, makes me sleep better.

Twice a week I exfoliate my face with Dermalogica Multivitamin Thermafoliant. This product is unbelievable, it’s pricy but it goes far. It takes me two years to finish a tube of this stuff! After exfoliation I put a mask on, either the Bioderma Sensibio mask or a clay bentonite mask.

I am a sucker for LUSH products and my guilty pleasure is relaxing in the bath after a long shoot with either a LUSH fizz ball or a bubble bar. If my skin is feeling dry I add a cup of milk and 100ml olive oil to my bath.

Part 1: My Skincare Beauty Tips

April 30, 2014

I’m super pedantic when it comes to my skin, I guess it’s partly because I’m a model and partly because of the way I grew up, but a good skin routine is of upmost importance to me.

A couple of my readers have mailed me asking me to share my skincare routine and what products I use for my skin so I’ve decided to do just that in two parts. Today I’ll share my skincare tips and tomorrow I’ll share my skincare routine.

I’m often being told what great skin I have and get asked what are my secrets, the fact is I never used to have clear skin. I struggled for some time, at one stage my skin was so bad I dropped out of modelling, stopped seeing my friends and spent most of my time locked up at my parents house. I was so embarrassed and every time I caught a glimpse of myself in a window reflection or in the review mirror of the car I would burst out crying. My skin was bad! My whole face was covered in heavy ache and I kept squeezing the pimples hoping they would go away but I just kept making things worse. After seeing the dermatologist and changing my products my father put me of a strict raw diet and threw away my make-up products which were clogging my pores. About six months after that my skin was pretty much brand new and I discovered a part of myself I had never known, a confident me. Having troublesome skin is not easy and it’s because of that that I am so pedantic about my skin now days. We only have one face, may as well treat it right.

Firstly I’d like to start off by saying that what works for me may not necessary work for you, the best advice I can give to you all is to go see a recommended skincare professional, such as a dermatologist. I have dry skin so the products that I use would not suit you if you had oily or combination skin types.

Secondly I chop and change my products around after I have finished using one, I don’t like my skin to get dependent on one specific facial wash or cream.

Thirdly if you can afford to treat yourself to a facial/deep cleanse once every 6-8 weeks then do. My favourite place to go for a facial is the Quantum Spa at the Radisson here in Cape Town. If you can’t afford it, do your own one at home. Boil a kettle and pour the hot water into a big bowl, put your head over the bowl and cover yourself with a towel and allow the steam to work it’s magic for about 10min. Once you’ve done that rinse your face and exfoliate, then put a face mask on (I’ll recommend some face masks tomorrow) and finish off by moisturising.

And lastly if there are some things I can stress more then anything it would be the following:

1.) Drink water… lots of it!

2.) Stay out of the sun and always, always wear sunblock, no matter what the weather is like.

3.) Stop smoking. Yes those terrible little sticks that you so dependent on, cut it out your life.
no fumo ebook in internet

4.) Alcohol is extremely dehydrating and bad for your skin especially the one’s high in sugar like your cocktails. Try cut back on your alcohol consumption as much as possible.

5.) Coffee… say bye to your coffee and hello to herbal teas.

6.) If you have a pimple, don’t squeeze! You’ll just make a mountain out of a molehill.

7.) Try green juicing. It’s one of the best things I have ever done to clear my skin.

I know these all sound like the typical things you’d hear from your mother, but trust me, simple changes like this make a huge difference on the skin. Try it for a month and you’ll see the changes.

Read part two tomorrow where I’ll be sharing my skin routine with you and what products I use.

On the Trail of a Scent

April 8, 2014

I love perfume and yes I am one of those girls that has way too many perfumes then she really needs, but what can I say? A girl loves what a girl loves right?

I often get complemented on my perfumes and asked what perfume I wear so I thought I’d share some of my favourite perfumes with you.

You’ll notice that I am not really a fan of strong, spicy scents but prefer the subtle, fruity scents. I love my perfume to have a classy presence that isn’t over-being. If you like me in that sense then you’ll love the ones below…

“Candy L’Eau” Prada
Personally I prefer the Candy L’Eau to the Candy perfume. This playful and seductive L’Eau is modified with notes of citruses and flowers. Caramel, sweet pea and juicy mandarin are some of the this scents strong notes. Think late Summer nights in Italy.
Feel: Elegant and cute.

“The One” Dolce & Gabbana
No matter what: rain or shine, for richer or for poorer this is the one perfume that I always have. It’s also the perfume most guys complement me on whilst wearing ;). The One is at once tempting, modern, and glamorous with a touch of classicism. With strong notes of mandarin and peach followed by jasmine and ending on the softer notes of vanilla and amber. A fragrance that is said described as the scent “for the exceptional woman who instantly draws attention”.
Feeling: Tempting, Modern and glamourous.

“Oriens” Van Cleef & Arpels
This perfume is my evening perfume. I very rarely wear it during the day as I find the scent to overpowering. Oriens is a Chypre fruity floral fragrance which means its a perfume “that is characterised by an accord composed of citrus top-notes, a middle centered on cistus labdanum, and a mossy-animalic base-note derived from oak moss and musks.” (wiki) The scent transports the senses into a French garden where colours and light collide in a thousand different ways, notice the design of the perfumes lid?
Feeling: Sophistication.

“L’Eau-d’Issey” Issey-Miyake
Timeless yet modern. This scent has a fresh, floral and woody scent with hints of lilies and soft freesia combined with sensual precious woods reminding you of a springtime forest. Picture yourself in a white dress, leaving the beach after a hot summers day, you about to grab a drink with some friends and you spritz yourself with some L’Eau-d’ Issey.
Feeling: Warm and sparkling.

“Cherie” Miss Dior
fragrance inspired by  love and romance. With a citrusy freshness and a jasmine heart Miss Dior is definitely a daring scent and a new classic, one that cold easily compete with Chanel No.5.
Feeling: Pure, precious and elegant.

“Blue Agava & Cacao” Jo Malone
My new favourite scent which I happened to stumble upon whilst shopping for candles. There’s something special about Jo Malone scents and the “naturalness” of them, particularly this specific scent. Inspired by Latin music the notes of “fresh limes and zesty grapefruit dance over a heart of blue agava flower. Sea salt cuts through the primitive rawness of cacao to reveal the sensuality of vetiver, cinnamon and musk.” Doesn’t that sound amazing?! The perfume relaxes me immediately, I often find myself spritzing a little of this perfume before bed or whilst traveling.
Feeling: Sexy, edgy and persuasive.
